What’s on the Mind of Data Center CEOs?

By Keith Markley, CEO, DDC Solutions

Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of sitting down with many data center executives—CEOs, CTOs, and infrastructure leaders—across the country. These conversations, often over coffee or walking a facility floor, have revealed a common thread: we’re all navigating a moment of massive transformation.

The data center industry has always evolved, but the pace and complexity of change in 2025 is unlike anything I’ve seen in my 25+ years of building and supporting mission-critical infrastructure. AI, sustainability, power constraints, and geopolitical uncertainty are no longer future concerns—they’re today’s boardroom agenda.

So what’s really on the minds of data center CEOs right now? Here’s what I’m hearing—and what we’re focused on at DDC Solutions.

AI Is Reshaping the Physical Layer

The AI boom isn’t just a software story—it’s a hardware and infrastructure revolution. CEOs are being asked to support workloads that demand 5x to 10x the power and cooling of traditional enterprise racks. And it’s not just training clusters anymore. Inference is moving closer to the edge, and customers expect high-density, low-latency environments everywhere.

This shift is forcing a re-evaluation of everything from rack design to airflow management. At DDC, we’re seeing a surge in demand for modular, high-density cooling systems that can be deployed quickly and scaled as needed. The CEOs I speak with aren’t just asking “how do we keep up?”—they’re asking, “how do we lead?”

Power and Cooling Are Strategic Assets

Five years ago, power and cooling were operational concerns. Today, they’re strategic differentiators. The ability to deliver more compute per square foot, with less energy waste, is now a competitive advantage.

One CEO told me bluntly: “If I can’t guarantee power and thermal stability, I can’t win the next tenant.” That’s the reality. And it’s why we’re investing heavily in solutions that optimize airflow, reduce energy consumption, and support GPU loads in the low range of 52kW to cabinets requiring both liquid and air cooling with densities north of 600kW per rack.

Sustainability Is No Longer Optional

Every CEO I talk to is under pressure to show progress on ESG goals. Whether it’s from investors, customers, or regulators, the message is clear: sustainability isn’t a side project—it’s a core business requirement.

This means more than just buying renewable energy credits. It’s about designing infrastructure that’s efficient, modular, and built for longevity. At DDC, we help clients reduce their carbon footprint not just through energy savings, but through smarter materials, modular deployments, and lifecycle planning.

Regulatory Complexity Is Growing

From AI governance to energy policy, the regulatory landscape is shifting fast. CEOs are being asked to make long-term infrastructure bets in an environment where the rules are still being written.

This is especially true for global operators. Data sovereignty, cross-border compliance, and local energy mandates are all in play. The smartest leaders I know are building flexibility into their infrastructure—choosing partners and platforms that can adapt as the landscape evolves.

Talent Is a Bottleneck—and an Opportunity

The complexity of modern data centers is outpacing the available talent pool. CEOs are struggling to find engineers who understand both legacy systems and next-gen AI infrastructure.

But this challenge is also an opportunity. I’ve seen forward-thinking leaders invest in training programs, automation tools, and partner ecosystems that extend their capabilities. At DDC, we’re committed to being part of that ecosystem—offering not just products, but expertise and support that help our partners grow.

The Future Is Collaborative

Perhaps the most encouraging trend I’ve seen is a shift toward deeper collaboration. CEOs are no longer looking for vendors—they’re looking for co-innovators. They want partners who understand their business, share their urgency, and bring ideas to the table.

That’s the kind of relationship we strive to build at DDC. Whether it’s co-developing a new cooling solution, hosting a joint executive briefing, or solving a deployment challenge in real time, we’re here to help our partners lead—not just keep up.

Final Thought

If you’re a data center CEO reading this, I’d love to hear what’s on your mind. The challenges are real—but so are the opportunities. And if we approach them together—with clarity, urgency, and innovation—I believe the next chapter of this industry will be its most exciting yet.

Let’s build it.
